The Pickard China Company and Dangela’s Dumplings both hail from Lake County, and both have recently been inducted into the Illinois Made Program thanks to the efforts of the Illinois Office of Tourism.
The Illinois Made program, which is run by the state tourism bureau, recognizes and honors excellent local businesses, artists, chefs, and manufacturers, among others. The Land of Lincoln “Makers” initiative collaborates with tourist marketing organizations like Visit Lake County, which was responsible for nominating the two local businesses as candidates for the award.
Fine china dinnerware and other decorative items are produced by Pickard China, which is headed up by Andrew Pickard Morgan, the president of the manufacturer. Pickard China has created bespoke dinnerware for a number of important people, including previous first ladies of the United States like Laura Bush and Michelle Obama. It has also made china for use in hotels and restaurants, as well as for heads of state. Since its founding in 1893, the business has been managed continuously by a Pickard family descendant.
