Nathan Fielder created, wrote, directed, and stars in The Rehearsal, an American docu-comedy series. HBO aired the first episode on July 15, 2022. The second season order was announced in August of 2022. In The Rehearsal, Nathan Fielder assists regular folks in practicing for potentially stressful interactions with others by employing staged scenarios and professional actors.
The circumstances can range from the simple (like admitting a fib about one’s educational background) to the complex (like parenting). Fielder orders elaborate sets in which every last detail is faithfully reproduced. He employs actors to take up residence in these sets while he and his clients rehearse dozens of potential conversational paths. In many cases, data is gathered covertly and then used to prepare the cast and construct the sets.
The Rehearsal Season 2 Storyline
At Adam’s birthday celebration in the series finale, Nathan Fielder joins in the fun by popping balloons with him. Nathan is taken aback when, upon asking Adam, age 6, to fetch him a root beer from the kitchen, an entirely other person emerges. Nathan comments that the party he arranges for Adam’s ninth birthday “doesn’t quite work the way I imagined it should have” in one scene. The results show that reality switching has an effect on the simulation structure of having a father figure in one’s life. Nathan soon learns that he was being yanked away from actual fatherhood by all the behind-the-scenes work he had to do (which should have been his prime focus.)
One of the young players, who had become close to his “fake father,” had to fight his way out of the production. Nathan learns from talking to the parent of the child actor who plays Adam, age six, on the show that the actor is having trouble readjusting to his former life, the real-life he left behind on the set. Additionally, he admits that he developed feelings for this child during the course of the story.
Nathan thought the child was just having a temper tantrum like any other kid his age, but the boy’s mother explained the actual reason he won’t go home. Remy is concerned about his father as he sees other kids being picked up or dropped off by their fathers at school. He feels safe with Nathan around because of their growing closeness and because he can pretend to be his daddy. Nathan had the same difficulty expressing his feelings for the new Adam that Remy had.
He has been following a script, from sending his son to a school for Jewish children to set up fictitious situations in which the boy must defend himself from bullies. Still, Nathan is puzzled by the current state of affairs. It doesn’t make sense to him, therefore he’s looking into what could be slowing down the simulation overall. He is with his son (like he had hoped), but his thoughts are elsewhere the whole time.
For a week, he pretended to be a father to a child who didn’t have one, and ever since then, he’s been curious about the kid. After the boy’s mother requests a visit, Nathan decides to pay a call. After spending so much time in a fictitious family, Nathan finds himself in an unfamiliar environment when he meets the kid actor. It’s tragic to see the boy stuck between the unreal and the actual world as he calls Nathan his daddy over and over again. Nathan tries to gently tell Remy that they’re done playing son and dad, but Remy insists that he doesn’t want Nathan to play him. Nathan learns from this that the kid has no idea about the craziness that is the acting profession.
