In the wake of a shooting at the homecoming football game for Richfield High School on Friday night, two students have been taken into custody. On Sunday morning, police in Richfield released a statement saying that a 16-year-old male who had previously attended Richfield High School was suspected of starting a fight.
He was taken into custody in Edina early on Sunday, while a current 15-year-old student of Richfield’s was taken into custody late Saturday for firing the shots that wounded two people. Both juveniles are currently detained at Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center pending the filing of official charges, which police say should occur early this week.

Both shooting victims, aged 18 and 21, are in stable condition, according to the police. The incident occurred at approximately 8:45 p.m. on Friday, close to the northeast entrance to the football field. A school official had just sent away many visitors. Still, they reported to the on-duty police officer that the persons in question had collected nearby, perhaps waiting for the Richfield vs. Bloomington Kennedy football game to end.
But at the beginning of the fourth quarter, bullets were fired, and the frightening scene was broadcast live online. Participants, spectators, and coaches dispersed. All remaining homecoming activities for the weekend were canceled after the victims were transported to the hospital. Beginning on Monday, pupils will have access to counselors and social workers.
This was the second school-related shooting in Richfield in 2018. An argument between students on January 28 resulted in a gunshot outside the South Education Center in Richfield, where 15-year-old Jamari Rice was killed. A third kid was treated for minor injuries at the scene, and a second was sent to the hospital in severe condition.
