Violent Night Storyline
David Harbour plays Santa Claus in “Violent Night,” but he is not the cheerful, gigantic softy audiences are used to seeing. In order to save the day, this Santa Claus isn’t scared to don an action hero costume and unleash the lethal power of festive decorations. A team of mercenaries sneak into the home of an affluent family on what appears to be a typical Christmas Eve in the teaser released on October 5.
Thanks to Santa, the family’s little daughter got a very unusual present: a radio that, she was assured by her parents, would let her in touch with the man himself. When it succeeds, Santa promises to do all it takes to protect the girl and her family. The bad guys are always caught off-guard by Santa Claus.
Harbour shot to fame after his performance in “Stranger Things,” but he has also established himself as a credible action star. He was in “Suicide Squad” in 2016, “Hellboy” this year, and “Black Widow” next year. In the 2024 film Thunderbolts, he will appear again as the Red Guardian.
Also, he’ll be in the highly anticipated third and final season of “Stranger Things,” as well as the upcoming video game adaption “Gran Turismo.” Trailers for “Violent Night” include an on-screen showdown between Santa (David Harbour) and the mercenaries’ leader (John Leguizamo), who is shown as a ruthless tyrant. The plot centres on a bunch of mercenaries who sneak into a Succession-style family’s home on Christmas Eve and keep them prisoner, which sounds like it could have shades of a darker Home Alone. In reality, Santa Claus is present and eager to prove that this St. Nick is no saint to the mercenaries who have been harassing him.
At CinemaCon in April of 2022, further footage was shown for the first time. Harbour said that he has to hurl f-bombs in his role since the tale is so out there. He compared his character to “f**king Santa Claus” who swings a “motherf**king hammer.” When the mercenaries break-in, the little girl inside calls out to Santa for rescue, and he mysteriously responds, “Santa Claus is coming to town.”
The video shows Santa adopting a bloody, excessively violent personality while his elf helpers use martial arts. He uses a sock full of billiard balls to beat one to death and then stabs the other in the eyes with an electrified Christmas star to finish off the other. After he has finished his gory spree, Santa says, “I’m jolly old St. Nick,” a legendary and humorous statement.
Keep an eye out for this one if you’re into movies like John Wick, Die Hard, and Succession, with Jim Hopper as Santa Claus. In the next days, weeks, and months, we may expect to learn more plot details. To be fair, it’s hard to see how this plan could be any crazier. A “coal-dark holiday thriller that advises you should always gamble on red.”
