The first episode of a new series that promises to uncover the offstage shenanigans of comedians like Seann Walsh and Jimmy Carr gets off to a smooth and intriguing start. Katherine Ryan reveals, for the very first time, the shocking truth about what occurs behind the scenes of a stand-up comedy performance.
She has installed cameras in every conceivable location in order to record the jitters, the rumors, the preparation, the enthusiasm, the camaraderie, and the conflicts that occur. This is not your typical stand-up gig in any way. It is our nation’s favorite comedians performing uncensored and unscripted stand-up, exactly as you have never seen them before.
Backstage With Katherine Ryan Review
A new hairstyle is in place for Seann Walsh. Jimmy Carr observes, “You look like Roger Daltrey after a car collision.” “It’s not a horrific automobile wreck, but something’s wrong.” You remind me of an emoji, Walsh says. They are both comedians and good friends, as you may have guessed. The premise of Backstage With Katherine Ryan (Amazon Prime Video) is that viewers will get a look at the real people behind the comedy act.
Cameras follow four comedians as they deliver sets in the prestigious London Roundhouse’s dressing rooms, hallways, and wings. We will be able to view each set and the responses of compere Ryan and the others waiting to go on, and we will gain insight into the miracles of the job and the real people behind the performances.
There is some truth to this. Hosted by Nick Mohammed (Nate in Ted Lasso) and US comic Desiree Burch, the pilot episode reveals that Carr is kinder than his on-stage persona, a genuinely witty man who creates one-liners as naturally as breathing; Walsh exudes desperate neediness; Mohammed is self-effacing sweetness personified, and Burch is the one you want to go out on the town with. This initial group at least communicates with one another.
In the second episode, two of the characters are chatting (Judi Love and Ivo Graham) while the other two are practicing their lines in their rooms before going onstage (Sara Pascoe and Frankie Boyle). However, they are all aware that cameras are watching them, therefore they don’t act as freely comedic as you might expect comedians to when they are in such a setting.
Ryan and writer Geoff Norcott have cringeworthy, overly dramatic spitball conversations as they come up with gags for her introductions of each act, interwoven with the performers’ preparations. To what extent is it plausible to say, “Jimmy seems like he would sex traffic a girl then ask her for gas money”? If not, how about “As a Black American, Desiree Burch’s life expectancy is lower than that of a peach”?
An understanding of the method (do they really just sit there and recite jokes that they’ve already written to each other? It would be nice to know the attrition rate (roughly how many don’t make it to the stage) or the likelihood of it happening. Their sections are too contrived to allow for any of this, but it would be fantastic to know if they care if a joke is punching down (the peach gag, maybe), across (the other – directed straight at Carr, not victims, I’d say), or up.
