MOUNT LAUREL, NJ — A car hit and killed a high school guidance counsellor and volleyball coach on the shoulder of I-295 South in Mount Laurel on Tuesday night, New Jersey State Police said.
Police said that William “Bill” Scully parked his Mercedes Benz on the right shoulder and got out of it.
Police say that a southbound Nissan Altima drove onto the right shoulder and hit him. Scully, 49, of Stratford, was taken to Jefferson Memorial Hospital by first responders, where he was later pronounced dead.
The school website says that Scully was a guidance counsellor at Sterling High School in Somerdale, Camden County. He also coached volleyball there.
The school has not said anything in public yet. On Wednesday morning, Principal Jared Claybourn tweeted, “UKnighted as a School Community”, with an emoji of hands praying.

As the news spread, Scully’s parents and friends took to social media to share their sadness. Di M. replied to Claybourn’s tweet by saying that Scully’s death was “a terrible loss for everyone” and that he was “the best!”
Stacey Hankins-Burdash wrote on Facebook that he “was a great help and mentor to the students of Sterling” and that “every student and parent who was lucky enough to know him will miss him.”
Hankins-Burdash and Chrissy Nicole Stanczyk said that many of the girls on the team saw Scully as a father figure.
“It feels like a bad dream,” Stanczyk wrote, sharing photos of the coach with his players.
The Collingswood High School volleyball team showed sympathy to the Sterling volleyball teams, saying, “His family, friends, coworkers, and players are in our thoughts and prayers.”
State police heard about the accident at 10:20 p.m. on Tuesday at mile marker 39.2.
The crash hurt the driver of the Altima, a 19-year-old man from Sicklerville, but not too badly. The state police are still looking into it, but no charges have been filed yet.
