Disney occasionally produces animated films on its own and remakes other animated films. Wish, heading to the kingdom of wishes, will be released by the company in 2023 to mark the studio’s 100th anniversary. Wish is set in the Kingdom of Rosas, which has a distinct aesthetic and combines the animation motifs from the 61 other Disney films. According to co-director Chris Buck, there isn’t anything else like it in the Disney canon.
The story centers on Asha, a brave heroine who is the first to communicate with the stars and wish for them. Outside of them trademarking and copyrighting the phrase “wish upon a star,” it’s not entirely clear how this will fit into the rest of the Disney legacy. When Asha makes a wish, it summons an absolute star with the name “Star” that resembles one of the rounded stars from Super Mario Galaxy.
Oscar-winner Ariana DeBose will play the lead role of Asha and perform songs by Julia Michaels. The album’s lead single, “More For Us,” was performed by DuBose. It unquestionably embodies Chris Buck’s claim that it draws from the Disney legacy by sounding like a combination of several different Disney animation classic songs. Take what you will from Buck’s statement that the film would “take easter eggs to a whole new level.”
The Disney Cinematic Universe will welcome back Alan Tudyk; in our opinion, he might as well be the voice of everything. We all know he is capable of doing it. Tudyk has now voiced characters in eight Disney animated films, including Moana, Wreck-It Ralph, and others. He will portray the adorable goat Valentino in this scene.
The impressive animation style stands out from the rest of Disney’s announcements in a positive way. The backgrounds are reminiscent of Sony’s Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, with their watercolor aesthetic interacting with sputtery CGI.
