Michael Oher Early Life
The Memphis, Tennessee birthplace of Michael Oher on May 28th, 1986. Oher was born to an alcoholic and crack cocaine addict mother, Denise Oher, and a father, Michael Jerome Williams, who spent a lot of time behind bars. His upbringing left him with little opportunity for positive reinforcement or correction.
During his first nine years of education, he enrolled in eleven different schools and repeated first and second grade twice. At the age of seven, he entered foster care, and since then, he has moved from home to home and back again.
Denise Oher’s brother was a cellmate of the man who would later kill Oher’s biological father, who was a high school senior at the time of his death. Michael Oher was 16 when he was taken in by Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy; at 17, the Tuohys were named his legal guardians. They had Oher aided by a tutor for 20 hours per week.

When Oher was a freshman at a public high school in Memphis, he decided to give football a try. Oher’s breakthrough season in football came in his junior year. In 2003, Oher was honoured as the Division II’s Lineman of the Year and was selected to the Tennessee’s All-State First Team. He also had success in basketball and track, earning two letters in each.
Oher started every game as the left tackle for the varsity football team his senior year. As a senior, he finished second at the state meet in the discus. In the beginning, Oher’s low grades prevented him from enrolling in an NCAA programme, but he managed to raise his GPA from 0.76 to 2.52, which allowed him to enrol in a Division 1 school.
He was able to get his GPA up to where it needed to be by taking online classes from Brigham Young University and making up for the Ds and Fs he had gotten earlier in his academic career with As. A number of Division I schools offered him scholarships after he quickly rose to prominence as a football prospect in the state of Tennessee.
Although he was offered football scholarships to play at several other schools, including Tennessee, LSU, Alabama, Auburn, and South Carolina, he ultimately decided to join the Ole Miss Rebels at the University of Mississippi.

Success in College
Oher made ten starts at guard for the Ole Miss Rebels in his freshman year. In no time at all, he was named to the All-America team’s freshman all-freshman squad. Preseason All-Conference and All-American honours were bestowed upon Oher after he made the move to left tackle for the 2006 season.
After his second year, he was recognised as a second-team All-SEC offensive lineman, and after his junior year, he was recognised as a first-team All-SEC offensive lineman. Oher also excelled academically at Ole Miss, as evidenced by a thirty point increase in his IQ test score between his childhood and college IQ tests. Even as a sophomore, he was able to make the dean’s list.
Oher announced in January 2008 that he would be dropping out of college to prepare for the upcoming 2008 NFL draught. However, just two days later, he publicly announced that he would be withdrawing from the draught in order to return to Ole Miss for his senior year.

Prior to his graduation, Oher was considered a top prospect for the 2009 NFL Draft. Oher was the 23rd overall pick by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2009 NFL Draft. This selection was acquired by the Ravens from the New England Patriots in exchange for the Patriots’ first and fifth round draught choices
. His adoptive family, the Tuohys, were present when he was drafted. In order to secure his services, the Ravens offered him a five-year, $13.8 million contract on July 30, 2009. After starting the 2009 season as the right tackle, he was moved to left tackle when lineman Jared Gaither got hurt. Eight weeks later, Oher was back at right tackle.
All 16 of Oher’s 2009 game starts were at either right or left tackle. On the right side of the offensive line in the Ravens’ 33-13 victory over the New England Patriots in the 2010 playoffs, he allowed no sacks in his first career postseason game.
Oher received six votes, putting him in second place for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year as voted on by the Associated Press. Oher’s Ravens team won Super Bowl XLVII in February 2013, giving him his first Super Bowl ring. The final score was 34–31.
Oher agreed to a four-year, $20 million contract with the Tennessee Titans in March of 2014. He played in eleven games for the Titans, starting eleven of them, before being placed on injured reserve on December 13 due to a toe injury. After the 2014 season, he was ranked by Pro Football Focus as the 74th best tackle out of 78. On February 5, 2015, the Titans cut ties with Oher.
A month later, the Carolina Panthers offered him a two-year, $7 million contract, which he signed. Oher said Cam Newton was a big reason why he chose to play for the Panthers, and Oher went on to have one of his best seasons ever while guarding Newton’s blind side.
In spite of his failures in Tennessee, Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman declared him the team’s starting left tackle “We’ve done our research on Michael, and we’re convinced he’s our solution. We’ll start him out at left tackle and see how things go from there.” Oher was on the field for 98.4 percent of the team’s snaps and was flagged only three times for a total of 25 yards.
On February 7, 2016, Oher and the Panthers played in the Super Bowl, where they were defeated by the Denver Broncos 24-10. Oher signed a three-year extension worth $21.6 million with the Panthers in June 2016, with $9.5 million of that sum being guaranteed.
Three games into the season, he sustained a concussion and was subsequently placed on injured reserve on November 25, 2016. When he failed a physical on July 20, 2017, the Panthers unfortunately cut ties with him.
