Seulgi has been a Red Velvet band member for eight years, one of five musicians who all contribute to the overall success of the collective. Up until this point, her individual artistry could only be seen in collaborations, her unit project with Irene, and tunes made for drama OSTs. She takes centre stage with her first solo mini-album, “28 Reasons.”
What exactly is Seulgi made of? These six tracks provide the answer: unadulterated brilliance. The album’s teaser material hinted at a good vs. evil theme, and the music is dark and delectable, incorporating conflicting powers of light and dark in each track. It also incorporates many parts of R&B and dance-inflected pop.
The mood is expertly set in the title tune, which features Seulgi as a character who can instantly transition between an innocent and naughty persona. She purrs in the first line, “I kiss your brother / I steal that heart.” It’s so much fun to see you in that state: “You can’t even feel the poison, my pleasure / Mischief and nervous eyes.” Even when she softly growls the final lyrics, “I ruin you and save you / Make your dreams come true,” her voice flows with emotion without ever losing its composure.

The artist is clearly in charge thanks to the mini-constant album’s use of that regal grace. Whether Seulgi is singing on the song “Los Angeles,” which shimmers with the kind of metallic electronics that nod to both the dazzling lights of city skylines and hints to shadowier goings-on below or taking on the role of a monarch on the majestically cold R&B of “Crown,” that power is palpable.
Even on the happier, sweeter song “Bad Boy, Sad Girl,” which she co-wrote with up-and-coming rapper BE’O, the lyrics’ frustrations about not knowing if your crush likes you can’t sway her from her course. Seulgi and the rapper from Show Me The Money collaborate on the song’s lone feature, and it turns out to be a wise decision. They each narrate their own versions of the events before coming together to confess their affections.
In addition to being Seulgi’s debut solo album, “28 Reasons” includes her first songwriting endeavour, “Dead Man Runnin’.” It’s a really strong beginning that shows her promise as a talented storyteller. Her songs effectively portray the descent into an unstable psychological condition and the effects of being gravely injured by another. She sings, “Slowly twist your neck,” drawing you into a dangerous environment with her vengeful voice. “How does it feel? An earthy voice, an impending sensation of tension, and a smiling monster inside of me.”
It shouldn’t be shocking that the singer’s debut as a solo artist is quite impressive. Seulgi has long established herself as a seductive and accomplished performer in Red Velvet, and she is now prepared to put that knowledge to use in her own bright moment. She shines even brighter on “28 Reasons.”
